Experience Trumps All
One of the best things about being a trainer and strength and conditioning coach is that I get to meet so many people.
Evidenced base training is the brain of my work, but experience is the spine. I love learning new training styles and many times this overlaps with everyday people to athletes and vice versa.
From hockey players, physique athletes, young kids, swimmers, Ironman competitors, fit dads, and fit soccer moms, I love training them all. The uniqueness of my job is that my job isn’t really a “job”. I get to do my most favorite thing in the world, and God has shined on me for the past three years. I am so thankful to all of you.
Just recently, I discovered the joy of swimming at Rock Sports, where I am the director of personal training. Some of my clients encouraged me and the owners to get into the pool. I panicked a bit. I got comfortable, and I didn’t realize until after the experience how out of shape my cardio/respiratory systems are, and I plan on fixing that.
I also got to relive the experience of being a newbie at the gym. Something I haven’t felt since I was 13 years old. It takes a lot of balls to walk into the pool when you see other folks swimming for what seems like hours. I couldn’t make it to the other side without panicking the first few rounds. So I treated like a high-intensity session. I only lasted a whole 37 minutes, and walked away with some great thoughts.
Point of the story is to try new things, learn from it, and use it in other facets of life.
